Safety measures provided by UPI QR codes

These measures allow money and personal information to stay safe throughout all the transactions. Here are the key safety protection provided sevens for UPI QR codes

No Access to Bank Info: However, sharing your UPI QR Code does not expose any bank account details. Instead, it only exposes your UPI ID or virtual payment address (VPA). The sender only gets to know your UPI ID (like name@bank), none of the sensitive information like your account number or IFSC. Your financial information is hidden, so it cannot be abused.

Transactions Secured by your PIN: For every UPI transaction, the sender must enter a UPI PIN, a secure 4-6 digit code known only to the user. No payment can be made without the PIN. You need your own UPI PIN as well, or even if someone scans your QR Code, he can't transfer money. The UPI PIN is also encrypted, adding to its security.

Real-Time Transaction Alerts: When you make a transaction with UPI apps, they send an instant notification, allowing you to track your account in real time. You also know instantly when a payment is sent to your account. In the event of any unauthorised activity, you don't have to waste time contacting your bank or blocking your UPI ID.

Multi-Layered Encryption: They are encrypted with bank-level security protocols, so payment information stays private. This ensures that the QR Code is not tampered with or abused and prevents hackers from capturing payment details.

UPI Ecosystem For Interoperability with Trusted UPI Platforms

Apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM UPI link others that are government-approved and exclusively support UPI QR Codes. Such platforms comply with the stringent security guidelines laid down by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). Transactions are processed solely through trusted and vetted apps. We prevent any theft through stringent NPCI regulatory checks, as no fraudulent app can go past this system if it tries to use your QR Code. Fraud Detection and Reporting Systems: Most UPI apps have fraud detection systems that can recognise unusual activity or suspicious transactions. Users can also directly report fraud from their app. Protection Features: Apps  alert you if a large number of transactions are attempted in a short time.

QR Code Tampering Prevention: Static or dynamic UPI QR Codes are also highly tamper-proof. A static QR Code remains actually associated with your UPI ID. Dynamic QR Codes are generated for specified amounts per transaction, which provides an additional level of security. It is impossible to alter QR Codes to divert funds to any other account. Dynamic QR Codes are one-time used, decreasing the chances of fraud.

Device Authentication: In this process, the sender's device must be authenticated. This prevents unauthorised payments from unregistered devices. UPI apps are mapped with the user’s phone number and device. But if someone has access to your UPI app, they can't make a payment without the phone's authentication.

Every UPI app adheres to stringent practices to make your transactions safe. Frequent updates safeguard against changing cyber risks. They are informed about fraud prevention via notifications and in-app recommendations. While UPI QR Codes, by design, are secure, the following practices must be implemented for enhanced protection:

1: Do not send your UPI PIN to anyone.

2: Confirm the name of the merchant before you pay.

3: Use only trusted UPI apps (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.)

4: Do not scan unknown QR Codes. Only use codes given to you by registered merchants or people.

5: Review your transaction history to look for any discrepancies.
