Can UPI credit card transactions be disputed like normal credit card payments?

Just like any other payment made with a credit card, you can dispute a transaction made with a UPI credit card, too. Even though UPI payments are processed through the UPI interface and therefore have a different “look” on the surface when they are made, they are still processed as a credit card transaction from the merchant to the credit card issuer. That means that all of the same consumer protections, chargeback processes, and grievance procedures that exist for standard credit card spending and transactions apply to a UPI credit card transaction, as well. If you see an unauthorised charge, a transaction that isn’t the correct amount, or a payment that you don’t recognise, you will be able to dispute that transaction with your credit card issuer, just like you would be able to dispute it if you had purchased with a standard credit card.

Most credit card issuers' dispute processes start with you notifying your credit card issuer of the problem via mobile app, customer service, or online banking. Once your card issuer receives your information, they will start an investigation into the transaction, which may include reviewing merchant documents, transaction logs, and authorisation records. Depending on your card issuer’s internal policy, most issuers will automatically credit your account, pending a resolution of your dispute. The time it takes to resolve can vary depending on the nature of the dispute; however, most disputes typically take several days or up to a couple of weeks to be resolved. The most significant thing to note about UPI transactions is that the speed at which you receive your money does not equate to the speed at which your dispute will be processed. While credit cards can provide you with a quick solution to your problem, the card networks have a longer timeframe (up to 90 days) for the entire verification process. Because UPI transactions are processed through card processing systems instead of going from bank to bank, they will have longer dispute resolution timelines and thus longer processing times when resolving disputes via a credit card versus a UPI payment from your bank.

Another thing to note is that until the dispute process is complete, you are obligated to pay your credit card bill regardless of whether the disputed amount or portion of the bill has been provisionally credited back to your account. As long as the amount is not provisionally credited to your account, it still appears on your credit card account as an unpaid invoice. Therefore, if you fail to make your payment on the due date because you are disputing the charge, you'll likely be assessed late fees and/or interest on the balance of your account. Therefore, it is very important that you expedite the filing of your dispute with your issuer and communicate with your issuer about your expected date of payment.

Credit card-based payments provide a more traceable method of payment than most digital payment methods. Since credit card payments are linked to an individual’s credit card, each payment is recorded in the individual’s monthly credit card statement, making it easier to identify discrepancies. This easy traceability is one of many reasons credit card payments provide greater protection to consumers than other forms of payment.

Not every issue qualifies for dispute. For instance, a transaction you authorised but later decided was not right for you will usually not fall under the definition of an improper transaction with regard to disputing a bank transaction. Banks typically only consider disputes for transactions that were not authorised, errors in processing or for merchant issues (e.g., a non-delivered item or incorrect charges).
