With the arrival of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), digital transactions have changed, thanks to its simplicity, its speed and its security. It permits you to carry out fund transfers, to make bill payments and to buy things on the internet, all from within your bank account. In the recent breakthrough UPI is enabling credit card transactions through RuPay Credit Cards providing seamless UPI-based credit card transaction experience.
Here, we guide you through how to attach a RuPay Credit Card to UPI and discuss the advantages, requirements and questions frequently asked to allow you to do it with ease.
UPI is a real time payment technology developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which is one of the most popular modes of payment in India. The system is relatively simple and fast money transfers from one bank account to another using mobile apps. UPI has for a long time been associated with debit accounts; however, now, with the introduction of UPI 2.0 and some other new upgradation, credit cards can also be added to UPI for transactions.
Created by NPCI, RuPay is the Indian domestic card payment network. It is also nowadays one of the most popular solutions as an economical alternative to other international credit card payment networks such as Visa and MasterCard. The joining of RuPay Credit Cards and UPI enables card users to use credit cards for payment and transaction purposes and directly from their credit card account, such as a debit card or bank account.
Some conditions need to be fulfilled before you move to linking your Rupay credit card and UPI, for example.
Active RuPay Credit Card: Make sure you have an active RuPay credit card issued by any of the participating banks.
UPI-enabled Bank Account: Your RuPay Credit Card is valid only if it is issued by a UPI-compliant bank. Not all banks offer this functionality so, it is recommended to check your card issuer.
Compatible UPI Application: UPI mobile application is also being used, if so, it is also likely to be able to hold credit cards. As applications like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and BHIM are very popular, there is a question to check whether they provide the necessary credit card functionality for RuPay.
Ensure that your mobile number is enrolled in your RuPay credit card, as the card issuer may send an OTP or a validation link during the enrolment process.
Updated UPI Version: Ensure that your UPI application is updated to the latest version to use the credit card integration features.
Active Internet Connection: A stable internet connection is necessary for both establishment and trading activities.

During this connecting of a RuPay credit card to UPI, the process is relatively easy, though the specific steps will vary slightly depending on the UPI application being used. Below is a general process to follow:
Step 1: Open UPI Application
Implement a chosen UPI-supported application on the mobile (e.g., PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, BHIM).
Step 2: Go to Payment Methods
After logging into the application, find the "Payment Methods", "Add Bank Account" or "Linked Accounts" options in the app menu.
Bank Accounts" or "Payment Settings" could be in some apps.

Step 3: Choose to Add a Credit Card
Select an option to configure a new way to make payment. If available, click on “Add Credit Card.”
There may be some of the options available under the heading of "Link Credit Card to UPI", or "Add Credit Card for UPI.
Step 4: Select RuPay Credit Card
Select "RuPay" from the list of options if the app is permitted to link RoPay credit card. If you do not see this option then check whether the functionality is available within your app, or if you use a different app.
Step 5: Enter Credit Card Details
You will have to give the following RuPay credit card PIN: [9 digit credit card PIN].
1: Card number
2: Expiry date
3: Card Verification Value (the 3-digit on the back of the card).
The app can also require additional data, e.g., your billing address.
Step 6: Authenticate Using OTP
Due to security reason, one time password (OTP) will be sent to mobile number of RuPay credit card registered by you.
Upon user request, verify by surrendering the OTP to complete the authentication procedure.
Step 7: Set UPI PIN (If Required)
Application may require you to set one if you do not already one. UPI PIN is a 4-6 digit authorization code for payment/transaction.
On-screen users are given the option to set their UPI PIN which will have to be entered in each transaction.
Step 8: Confirmation
Authenticated, your RuPay credit card will be fully integrated with UPI.
You will get a confirmation message and then you are supposed to be using RuPay credit card for UPI payments.

Once your RuPay credit card is integrated with UPI, you can make payments in the following manner:
Send Money: Consider creating a UPI transfer of money from my RuPay credit card to any bank account.
Pay Bills: UPI can be associated with a card club of your RuPay credit card to pay utility as well as credit card bills, etc.
Merchant Payments: Pay merchants who accept UPI payment e.g,. online and offline retailers by choosing your RuPay credit card as a payment option.
QR Code Payments: Use your UPI app to scan the merchant’s QR code and pay using your RuPay credit card. The transaction will be charged to your credit card.

Convenience: Thus, by linking your credit card to the UPI, you can make payments instantly and conveniently without having to switch between various apps or services.
Unified Payment System: It integrates all your payment methods into a single display that permits you to manage both debit and credit cards seamlessly.
Enhanced Security: UPI, along with (identification probe information) provided by your UPI, PIN and OTP authentication, provides an additional layer of security during chip payment card transactions.
Rewards and Offers: You are still eligible for credit card rewards, cashback and offers while paying using your RuPay credit card for UPI transaction.

24/7 Accessibility: UPI is 24 hours a day, which means you can do payment or transfer of funds anytime in a day or night.

Even though using RuPay credit cards in conjunction with UPI is meaningful, there are also some drawbacks to be taken into account:
Limited Availability: Not all UPI apps do support the card attachment, and the card attachment feature may not be accessible to all RuPay credit card issuers.
Fees and Charges: Some banks or UPI apps may charge extra for using credit cards for specific transactions, especially on peer-to-peer transfers.
Credit Card Eligibility: With regard to the possibility of attaching a credit card, this might depend on credit card scheme and related credit card issuer. Not all RuPay credit cards are equipped for UPI linking.
Transaction Limits: Card transaction limits may be greater than a debit account limit, and you may need to verify transaction limits with your card provider.

If you are facing issues while adding your RuPay credit card to UPI, follow these troubleshooting steps:
Check Card Eligibility: Please make sure that your RuPay credit card has a UPI linking facility. Contact your bank for more details.
Clear App Cache: There are occasions on which purging cache of your UPI app can resolve issues with setup of payment mechanisms.
Update App: Make sure you are in the latest version of your UPI app, which may contain important bug fixing and improvements.

Can I use my RuPay credit card for UPI transactions even if I don't have a savings account linked to UPI?
Answer: Yes, a RuPay credit card can be used for UPI transactions without a saving account i.e. UPI does not involve the use of a bank account connection since credit cards can be added directly to the service (ie. Nonetheless, your UPI transactions are only enabled via your credit card issuer's willingness to support this integration, AND, you need a live RuPay credit card. Just make sure the kind of application that you are using allows credit card payments.
2. Will adding my RuPay credit card to UPI affect my credit card billing cycle?
Answer: No, linking your RuPay credit card with UPI does not change your credit card billing cycle. It simply allows you to make transactions via UPI. Transactions through UPI will be billed to your credit card account, and your billing cycle will, therefore, be governed by your card issuer's terms. You will still receive a normal billing cycle credit card statement with all UPI-based payments.
3. What should I do if my RuPay credit card fails to link to my UPI app?
Answer: If your RuPay credit card is unable to be linked to your UPI application, check first that your card can be linked to UPI by phone call with the bank or the issuer of the credit card. You can also ensure that your app is up to date and that your internet connection is stable. If the problem arises, please attempt to clear the cache of the application, reboot your mobile, or reclear the card details. To obtain assistance, please reach out to the support staff of your app or the customer service line of your card provider.
4. Is there any transaction limit with the RuPay credit card for UPI?
Answer: Yes, transaction limits exist when using your RuPay credit card via UPI. These restrictions can be different based on the issuer of the credit card one has and the nature of the transaction (e.g., peer to peer, bill payments, etc. Conventionally, the transaction amount limit UPI credit card transaction limit is far less than that of debit card transactions because of credit limits. Do not always confirm transaction limits and conditions only with your bank.
5. Can I earn rewards or cashback on UPI transactions made with my RuPay credit card?
Answer: Yes, reward or cashback when UPI is transacted via the RuPay credit card is feasible if the credit card scheme offers you a similar scheme. Various RuPay credit cards have accrued customer’s rewards points, Cash Back, or other benefits while using the card on multiple kinds of transactions, such as UPI transactions. However, it is recommended to check the terms and conditions of your card issuer pertaining to UPI-based transaction rewards, as there might be a variation in the same.
