The paradigm of how the population carries out financial transactions has been transformed by UPI (Unified Payments Interface) in India due to UPI. Using this system, it is possible to transfer money, payout, and be paid immediately by mobile phone and, therefore, is the main means of staying in touch for millions of users.
Conventionally, a UPI transaction requires one to have a bank account associated with a UPI-supported app such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or others. But do you know that UPI is also possible to be used without having a bank account? Yes, it’s true. Today, with the advent of such services as UPI Lite, etc., it is feasible to access UPI even if there is no traditional bank account. In this article, we will explore how to use UPI without a bank account, the methods available, and how they work.
Before thinking about how to use UPI without a bank account, first know what UPI is. UPI is a real-time mobile banking payment system for transferring money from one bank account to another. Fund transfer using an easy, private, fast manner is its operational mode. In UPI, the users are able to associate their bank accounts, set a UPI PIN, and perform immediate payments and transactions from their mobile phones.
UPI has emerged as one of the most popular payment systems in India, where buyers can incur payment for shopping/services, pay bills, top up mobiles, and transfer money to friends and relatives. It is a very easy system that requires only a mobile number and an account holder UPI PIN for registration with it.
But what if you don't have a bank account? Still, is it possible to still benefit from the advantages of UPI? The answer is yes.

There are reasons why someone might opt for UPI without a bank account:
No Bank Account: There may be a lack of access to a conventional bank account for some people, for example, for dwellers in the countryside or for people who are young and have not opened a bank account yet.
Prepaid Accounts: There are also some who are, by necessity, accustomed to only being able to conduct business using prepaid accounts instead of being able to authorize a full bank account. Prepaid cards are helpful for people who would like to restrict their spending or not be using their normal bank accounts.
Ease of Transactions: UPI without a bank account can offer a more convenient way to conduct small-scale transactions, like paying for goods, recharging mobile phones, and making quick transfers.
Budget Management: The fact that users can reportedly handle UPI with a prepaid account enables them to control their money effectively, without the possibility of overspending from a conventional bank account.

Although traditionally, a UPI is based on a bank account, there are many variants of doing a UPI without a complete bank account. Here are some of the methods available:
Prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) are electronic wallets or prepaid cards that allow the user to perform payment transactions, money transfers, and other similar transactions without a traditional bank account. These PPIs can be employed for UPI transactions if they are UPI enabled.
The payment instrument is, in fact, a prepaid account with the possibility of depositing the funds in advance to make use of this account in various transactions. Most used digital wallets, like Paytm, PhonePe, and MobiKwik, provide their users with the facility of adding some money into their virtual wallets and also enabling them to make the payments instantly from the digital wallets by using UPI.

Download a UPI-Enabled Wallet App: Firstly, you will need to download a wallet app that allows UPI transactions. Apps, i.e., Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay, provide the user the ability to link his/her purse to the UPI without needing any bank account.
Create Your Account: Upon installation of the app, users must register for the platform by providing their mobile phone number and other data.
Add Money to Your Wallet: To be able to use the wallet for UPI transactions, though, the money has to first be loaded to the prepaid wallet. There are various routes to do this, such as using debit or credit cards and/or making bank transfers (if you have a bank).
Enable UPI: After adding funds, enable UPI within the app settings. With this, you will be able to bind your wallets to a UPI ID and do the transactions from it.
Make UPI Payments: After UPI is active, using the wallet, you are able to do payments, transfer funds, or purchase items and services via the UPI interface.
Using UPI Lite: Besides PPI, UPI Lite is a new characterization that allows users to transact at low value without holding a bank account. UPI Lite enables a low-value transaction on the device by an on-device wallet.

There are a number of digital banks that can have a user register and set up an account that doesn't require a traditional bank account. The services include, but are not limited to, Airtel Payments Bank, Jio Payments Bank, etc.
Link Your Mobile Number: These digital services are in need of the registration of your mobile phone number in their system and provisional UPI-based payment/transfer facilities. Using Mobile Number Linked to Non-Banking Financial Services: For a handful of cases, the transaction can also be processed via a mobile number associated with other non-banking financial products. These services may not necessarily force you to hold a full bank account but still provide access to UPI functionality for money and money transfers.

Without a bank account, is it necessary to have a smartphone to be able to use UPI?
No, a smartphone is necessary for using UPI, which does not require having a bank account. You'll require a smartphone to download and use UPI-enabled apps (such as Google Pay, Paytm, or PhonePe) and to use UPI Lite or digital wallet services. In addition, your mobile number, which goes with the wallet/UPI account, is required to perform verification of transaction(s), since that information is used for verification.
Are there any limits on the amount I can transact using UPI without a bank account?
According to the NPCI website, UPI transactions conducted outside of a bank account are capped by limits per day (increased to Rs 5,000 for transaction size) and capped per day (30 transactions in total), which are determined by the financial institution that is processing the transaction. Not to mention that there are limitations on the type of transaction that can be performed with money via UPI without a bank account. It is worth noting, for example, that UPI Lite has a transaction value limit, usually between ₹200 and ₹500, and one can preload a defined amount into the UPI Lite wallet. Analogously, prepaid payment instruments (PPIs) may also include transaction limits.
Will I be able to attach more than one prepaid wallet/UPI Lite account to a single UPI ID?
Typically, UPI allows you to attach only one bank account or one prepaid wallet to one UPI ID. However, in some cases, the platforms allow you to associate more than one wallet/account to a single UPI ID, but the condition is that you should make sure that such a facility is provided by the platform via its terms and conditions.
Will my transactions be safe if I lose my phone while using UPI without a bank account?
However, losing your phone does carry a security risk, and many UPI-enabled apps come equipped with safety measures (e.g., PIN, pattern lock, or biometric authentication (finger, face)) to prevent access to your account. When your mobile phone is lost, you should immediately lock the SIM card in your telecom provider and notify the provider of the app/wallet service of your block request.
Can I use UPI without having any bank cards?
No, you don't need a physical bank card you can use with UPI. UPI is using your mobile number and your UPI ID, and no card is required to carry out transactions. Prepaid wallets and UPI Lite are viable options where it is not necessary to have a debit/credit card.
Does UPI without a bank account incur any other fees?
Although the overall service is free of charge, some prepaid wallets or UPI Lite could impose a fee for replenishment, money transfer, or output to a bank account. These costs vary depending on the platform and the kind of transaction(s); therefore, it is recommended to have a look at the terms of service of these platforms before using them.
