Digital finance has turned the tables on transactions and the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has been the frontrunner in this metamorphosis. UPI enables users to make fast money transfers, pay by mail and provide payments for shopping on the Internet all carried out from mobile devices. PhonePe is one of the most used mobile applications in India for payment by Unified Payments Interface (UPI). It provides people with the means to conduct financial transactions and banking operations directly from cell phones without interruption.
UPI PIN (Personal Identification Number) is required to authorise payment transactions on the UPI platforms (e.g., PhonePe). UPI PIN routines are also exploited for verification and authentication of financial transactions, thus for security reasons. It has to be requested every time you make a money transfer, a bill payment, or a purchase. But what if you need to update your UPI PIN and you don't have your debit card with you? It is a widely held notion that you would require a debit card in order to change your UPI PIN, but that is wrong. This article will guide you step by step on how to change your UPI PIN in PhonePe without needing a debit card.
Before we discuss how to reconfigure your UPI PIN, we describe what an UPI PIN is and why one needs to be configured.
The UPI PIN is a 4-6digit code, which is set by the user at the time that the user first attaches his/her bank account to a UPI-compatible app such as PhonePe. It is a password for authentication of transactions and to stop others from accessing your account without permission. You use this PIN to authenticate all buying, including making a transfer or buying a good and service. Without the UPI PIN, you cannot complete any payment.

Just follow the following simple steps to reset the UPI PIN of PhonePe without a debit card
Step 1: Open the PhonePe App
The first step you have to take is to launch the PhonePe app on your mobile phone. Ensure that you are logged into your PhonePe account. If you are not logged in please enter the username and password to login.
Step 2: Go to the 'My Money' Section
Once you’re logged in, tap on the 'My Money' section, which is usually available on the bottom menu or under your profile options. My Money" is a section providing info about your linked bank, payment methods and UPI settings.
Step 3: Select 'Bank Accounts'
Under the "My Money" section are several options such as Bank Accounts, Cards, Wallets etc. Tap on the 'Bank Accounts' option, which will show you the bank accounts that are linked to your PhonePe account.
Step 4: Choose the Bank Account from which you want to Update the UPI PIN.
In Bank Accounts, you can find an item showing all the bank accounts associated with your PhonePe account. Select the account you want to change the UPI PIN.
Step 5: Tap on 'Change UPI PIN'
Following the choice of your bank account, under the "Change UPI PIN" option, a window appears. Tap on this option to proceed. If you are accessing PhonePe for the first time or has not set up a UPI PIN yet, you will see a new UPI PIN setting option.
Step 6: Verify Your Identity
At this stage, PhonePe will request you to prove your identity before deactivating/modifying the UPI PIN. You will need to authenticate this request through the mobile number (i.e., mobile number linked to your bank account). Occasionally you might have to type an OTP (One Time Password) which will be sent to the registered mobile number.
If you have not already registered your mobile number to your bank account of UPI, there will be a request to register it in this stage.
Step 7: Enter Your New UPI PIN
Verify your identity and you will then be asked to enter a new UPI PIN. The PIN is a 4-6 digit integer which is easy to memorize for the user but hard for others to guess. Please protect your newly created UPI PIN and do not used easily guessable numbers (for example, 1234 or 0000).
Step 8: Confirm the New UPI PIN
After you have keyed in the new PIN, PhonePe will request you to verify the PIN by typing it again. This is done to ensure that you’ve typed the correct PIN and avoid any mistakes.
Step 9: Completion of UPI PIN Change
After verification of your new PIN, PhonePe will notify that your UPI PIN has been changed successfully. Now you can use this new PIN to authorise payments, fund transfers, and other UPI transactions.

In case you have forgotten your UPI PIN and are unable to recall it, you can easily reset it without the need for a debit card. Here’s how: Open the PhonePe app and navigate to the "Bank Accounts" list under the "My Money" section.
Select the Bank Account: Select the bank account for which you want to reset the UPI PIN.
Tap on 'Forgot UPI PIN': If you’ve forgotten your UPI PIN, there will be an option called 'Forgot UPI PIN'. Tap on this option to proceed.
Verify Your Identity: You’ll need to verify your identity using your mobile number linked to your bank account. You may be requested to provide an OTP that you have received on your mobile phone.
Create a New UPI PIN: Once your identity is verified, you will be requested to generate a fresh UPI PIN. Enter a 4-6 digit number and confirm it.
UPI PIN Reset Complete: All subsequent payments will be made using the freshly generated UPI PIN after it is successfully set up.
While it is standard to also use the debit card to verify bank account details during registration, such reset or change of UPI PIN is not necessary. The only thing you have to provide is your linked mobile number (which is linked to your bank account and used to verify your identity). Your bank information, such as your debit card, is already verified when you initially set up UPI, so there is no need to do so again with a change of PIN.

Incorrect PIN Format: Please ensure that your new UPI PIN is 4-6 digits long. If the PIN is too short or too long, there will be no need to reset it.
Incorrect OTP: If you do not receive OTP on your registered mobile no, then verify your network connectivity. You might also need to check if there is a right linkage of your mobile phone number to your bank account.
App Errors: At times, PhonePe might exhibit errors or bugs at the new UPI password creation stage. In this case, try restarting the app or updating it to the latest version.
Avoid Easy Numbers: Do not use simple sequences like 1234 or 0000. These can be easily guessed.
Use Random Numbers: Pick a PIN that is challenging for other people to guess, but easy for you to remember.
